Toward multiple clusters created by events

A full renovation project of an A-COOP supermarket for the members of JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) in Gotemba. The plan was to transform the organization’s less-profitable retail business by consolidating farmers markets in the entire region. The site was chosen for its convenience being located in front of the cooperatives’ main office, close to the city center, and along National Route 246. The existing steel frame building had the appearance of a typical suburban commercial facility with a slanted rib metal roof and signage boards on the front and back that extend from the exterior walls. The floor plan was unique as it had the rooms for backyard activities and food processing located behind the shop. Gotemba is a popular sight-seeing location with Mt. Fuji trail entrance, an amusement park, and outlet malls, but as an agricultural area, the production volume is somewhat too low. The issues to be solved here encompassed from consolidating the farmers markets to taking measures against the declining number of farmers to restructuring the supplier system to developing new products that have added value. What we felt this project should become was not a space that meets specific functional needs but one that could offer various opportunities for exploration.

The “package” containing the back-and-front composition of the backyard function and the shop was deconstructed into parts of moderate sizes, which were then reorganized into a complex whole where multiple relationships coexisted.

The line of the openings was set back 4.7 m to create a deeper space under the eaves. The existing rooms for food processing and kitchen which used to form a band bordering between the back and front were cut through and divided. The shop area was scaled down, and several small volumes were placed around it.

What can we do for a place for exploration? In addition to employing the above-mentioned smaller, efficient scales and usability, as well as natural lighting, we decided to work with the conditions that we were facing without preconceptions based on the existing values. Can we create with an open-mindedness that accepts, for example, the coloring that characterizes the unique 3.5-meters high ceiling and corners of a supermarket, or the format of those signboards on the building’s front and back, and treat “everything as materials”?

By shortsightedly repeat an examination which tries out events — not the height of the ceiling but the relationship between the remaining ceiling and its surroundings, not the composition but the crushing colors unique to building materials, not the proportion but the shapes that connect the traces — the parts with their unique appearances and the whole with glimpses of the framework’s structure emerged.

Neither the multiple event-like clusters nor the framework supporting them come before the other. Instead, they are in a balanced state which, we believe, is suited for a place for actions that had a standardized type as its starting point but is heading toward an uncertainty. We may say that this was an attempt to positively turn the uncertain present into architecture.
